Biography
Gibb was a Scottish-trained painter who arrived in New Zealand in 1876. A prolific artist, he painted many views of the dramatic landscape of the South Island, including popular landmarks such as the peaks at Milford Sound. His emphasis was on the majesty and awe-inspiring nature of the land, which he suffused with a Romantic sense of mystery.

Along with contemporaries Charles Blomfield and John Gully, Gibb produced a vast number of idealised landscapes featuring spectacular scenes.

A professional artist and teacher who had trained in Scotland, Gibb settled in Christchurch on arrival in New Zealand in 1887.

John Gibb's work received great acclamation in art society exhibitions for the attention paid to the realistic treatment of reflections in water surfaces. So careful is his technique that the pictures seem to invite being viewed upside down.
