Gibb was a Scottish-trained painter who arrived in New Zealand in 1876. A prolific artist, he painted many views of the dramatic landscape of the South Island, including popular landmarks such as the peaks at Milford Sound. His emphasis was on the majesty and awe-inspiring nature of the land, which he suffused with a Romantic sense of mystery.
