The original Burton Brothers were Alfred Henry Burton (1834-1914) and Walter John Burton (1836-1880). Alfred survived his brother, who committed suicide in 1880, to become one of the best-known Victorian photographers in New Zealand. Born in England, they came to New Zealand via Australia in the late 1860s and set up in Dunedin. From then until about 1898 the company amassed thousands of whole plate (6 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch) views covering practically every town and city in New Zealand.
