Biography
Born at Madeira in 1840, Robley is best remembered for his book "Moko: Or Maori Tatooing" published in 1896. He arrived in New Zealand in 1864. With a Maori vocabulary and a copy of Maning's "Old New Zealand" he set out to make himself familiar with Maori life, an interest that he retained until his death in 1930 at the age of 90. Robley was with the 68th Regiment during the battle of Gate Pa in Tauranga. His work was in demand by the London journals of the period and he illustrated many scenes during the Maori wars. In 1865 he left New Zealand and eventually rose to the rank of Major General. He retired from the army in 1887 and lived in London until his death.
