Description
One of a set of hand-embroidered portière curtains displayed at the Glasgow Exhibition c. 1870-1880 (potentially the International Exhibition of 1888, which Queen Victoria opened). Queen Victoria was impressed by them and some were purchased or chosen for Balmoral Castle. As a consequence no more curtains were allowed to be sold and the remaining items were presented to the organiser of the display whose daughter used them regularly during summer months and subsequently gave them to donor, Mrs Holmes. Once used as a bedspread.
