Description
This large tivaivai/tivaevae is an appliqued quilt or bed covering featuring large, slightly abstracted floral forms arranged in a symmetrical pattern across a blue background. The green applied motifs are unadorned, whereas the yellow rose motifs are enlivened with pink, red and lilac detailing.
This item was chosen from a number offered to the Trust for its consideration. It has been designed and sewn by two members of Tokoroa’s Pasifika community who are prominently featured in the 2006 book ‘Tokoroa Tivaivai Tivaevae Artists’. On behalf of Mama Mirinoa Ngata, Akarere Henry offered the following commentary on the piece: ‘The motifs are yellow roses. There are 16 in total which is reflective of the 15 islands within the Cook Islands, with Tokoroa laughingly referred to as the 16th island. The rose is symbolic of our presence here in NZ as we do not have roses in the Cook Islands. Its colour depicts the warmth of the connection between our countries. When she was asked if she had a name for it, she replied – Te Puhela o te Tiare (the flowers have bloomed).’
