[W M Cullen Picture Hall, Wharf Street, Paeroa. Alterations and additions] Drawing No.2.

Maker
Edgar Ernest Gillman
Production date
02 Nov 1914
Description
Drawing shows front elevation, cross section and longitudinal section. This view of the 1914 picture hall shows how the parapet was used to create an impression of extra height and make the building more prominent. The extra height above the stage indicates preparation for multi-purpose use (stage shows). The tiny 3m x 2m “operating room” for the projectionist is asbestos-lined, a sensible precaution at that time when using carbon arc projectors! This room has its own ventilator; there are two other “torpedo” ventilators serving the needs of the audience. Note the structural safety precautions taken: the steel cornice that runs the length of the building, the steel linings on the ceiling and the external support braces on the exterior of the main hall (left side of top-right drawing).
