[Mail Buildings, Te Aroha 1910] Drawing No.1

Maker
Edgar Ernest Gillman
Production date
11 May 1910
Description
Ground Plan and Front Elevation of newspaper office. Plan view of “The Mail” office building in Paeroa, built by Markwick and O’Regan in 1910. The plan shows two shops and the newspaper editor’s office on the ground floor. The front view of the building displays the high parapet that adds to the impressiveness of the building. At the same time it hides the detail of the monopitch roof behind. The land slopes away to one side behind the building, as shown by the different heights of the two sets of exit steps.

This building is unusual in several respects. First we notice the use of embossed steel panels above the doorways to provide a form of decoration, and the “glass curtain” walls that front the shops, both innovations at that time.
