Proposed Bungalow Residence for Mr W.J. Wernham, [Parawai,] Thames. Drawing No.1.

Description
1912 design for Mr Wernham, built by contractor E. Whitehead at Parawai, Thames. Conventional 3-bedroom weatherboard bungalow on wooden piles with a corrugated iron roof. The residence is provided with a 600-gallon water tank and the laundry and longdrop toilet are located in a separate outhouse as was common at that time. There is a sunporch at the rear, suggesting that might be the north-facing wall, although the front entrance is via the front verandah, which strangely (by today’s standards) leads the visitor past the guest bedroom. Internally, all rooms except the office and scullery lead off a central hallway, and the 10ft stud offers plenty of ceiling height. The hot water cylinder is adjacent to the cooking range, suggesting this might have been a ‘wetback’ arrangement, although this is not stated on the drawing. At 150 sq.m., the house is of modest size. The drawings show the plan view, elevations and section.
