Flood. The river’s ancient ability to regulate water levels through its interconnected wetlands is a thing of the past, as much of Waikato’s ‘swamps’ have been drained in its conversion to pasture. River levels are now controlled through the series of hydro dams upstream of Hamilton, and flood banks and spillways further downstream.
