Description
Portrait of two nurses in uniform - Sisters Fricker and Smale. Black and white photograph mounted on card. Nurses Matilda Fricker (right) and Ivy Muriel Smale both women trained at Waikato Hospital. In April 1916, Smale left on the same transport ship bound for Egypt as her husband AD Smale, who was killed on the Somme. She later worked at No. 1 New Zealand General Hospital at Brokenhurst in Hampshire. She later returned to Waikato hopsital where he was a sub-matron for many years and a pew in the chapel is named for her. She died in Tauranga in 1954.
