Mouth of the Oterei

Maker
Michael Moore
Production date
2004
Description
The Oterei is a river in southern Wairarapa. Typical of Moore's landscapes this scene shows the simplified natural forms and smoothly graduated colours that he has become known for. In 1994 Moore returned to the Wairarapa, where he was born, as artist in residence at Te Awaite, a historic coastal sheep station. Although this work was painted in 2004 it is likely to have been influenced by the artist’s time spent in the region.

Michael Moore (1956–) is a self-taught artist based near Cambridge in the Waikato district. Taking up painting fulltime in the 1990s, Moore developed a distinctive style and a passion for depicting the natural environment. A frequent traveller, Moore works out of visual diaries as a way of recording the places and landscapes he visits. This has also influenced his tendency to work in series when creating his paintings. His work has been collected extensively throughout New Zealand and internationally.
