Description
Bilum bag made from handmade rope. Bark of special tree (scraped, dried and fine threads rubbed on thigh, coated with ash) made into a fine strong rope. Similar to method Maori used to make thread for cloaks. Bilum is worn tied round head and hanging down the back. Women carry enormous loads in the bilum. Men wear a smaller one across the shoulder. String is made from fibres beaten from inner bark of various mountain bushes.
