Carving, Wairowo and Mauriasi

Maker
Gordon Kuper
Description
Carving of Wairowo, the shark deity, and Mauriasi, who was taken for a ride by the shark. Mauriasi was kept alive by breathing through the anal canal of Wairowo. Another example of a religious myth depicted in art form. This "myth" may have some truth to it. Sharks are regarded as either benevolent or evil and can change according to certain acts they perform. This shark was likely to be a benevolent one.
