Biography
Mainly self-taught, Welch was a major figure in the Wellington art scene, and was an official war artist from 1914-1918. He worked outdoors, taking his inspiration from atmospheric effects, with an economical use of colour.

Nugent Welch joined the Silverstream painting group which was formed near Wellington by the Impressionist artist, James Nairn in 1915. Silverstream painters gathered weekly at "Pumpkin Cottage", named for the yellow pumpkin Nairn hoisted on the roof as a symbol of defiance of the conventional art world.
