Clare Ellaline Hope Leighton (also known as Clare Veronica Hope Leighton).
b. London, Great Britain, 1898 d. Waterbury, Connecticut, USA

Clare Leighton was born into a literary family. Her parents Robert Leighton (1858-1934) and Marie Connor Leighton (1865-1941) were authors, she had a brother named Roland,
Leighton attended art school Brighton College of Art and also Slade School of Fine art. She went on to study at the Central School of Arts and Crafts where she became proficient in the art of wood engraving.

Like many students to this day, Leighton decided to travel. She went throughtout Europe. She eventually visited America in the 1920s, 30s and returned eventually to live. She become a member of the academic staff at Duke University from 1943 - 1945 in the Department of Art and Aesthetics.

Her career was spent largely as a book illustrator focusing people who work the land, horticulture. She passed away in 1989 in Connecticut.
