Biography
The founder of the Auckland Society of Arts, Hoyte was a British artist who was resident in New Zealand between 1860 and 1879. He imposed an `English frame' on the landscape, seeing it as a grand, remote, majestic country that would strike awe into the hearts of the new European settlers. In Hoyte's work, the natural features of the landscape always dwarf evidences of civilisation such as boats, cottages, and people.
