Biography
Born in France, Louise Henderson became the "grand dame" of New Zealand painting, in a lengthy career. Like many women artists, she enjoyed the support of an artistic family: her father was secretary to the sculptor Auguste Rodin, while her gradfather was an Arts Minister. She emigrated to New Zealand in 1932 with her New Zealand-born husband.
Initially she worked with her friend Rita Angus, sketching in the Canterbury landscape: later she studied with the painter John Weeks. Her move towards abstraction was confirmed after a year spent in Paris in 1952, studying under the Cubist master Jean Metzinger. Henderson's cubist-inspired works follow
her experience in France.
