Biography
Frances Ellis is an artist who was "rediscovered" in a retrospective exhibition which brought her to the attention of the contemporary public in 1989. Born in New Zealand, Ellis moved permanently to Sydney in 1934, where she studied (and later taught with) the eminent artist A. Dattilo-Rubbo.

Using Sydney as her base, Ellis made many trips to Europe and New Zealand. She exhibited often in Hamilton, and had a close association with Waikato artists such as her friend Ida Carey. The Waikato Museum holds many examples of Ellis's work, most notably a large body of watercolours.
