Biography
Living in Christchurch, Grace Butler studied at the Canterbury School of Fine Arts. She was an independent and dedicated `out-of-doors' painter who thought nothing of standing in the snow to paint, balancing on a covering over hot stones. She is best-known for her mountain scenes painted in the Southern Alps, where she recorded the region's dramatic landscapes and changes of weather.
Taught by Sydney Thompson and Cecil Kelly at the Canterbury College School of Art from 1910-1914, Grace Butler's landscape painting resides firmly within the Canterbury tradition.
Butler preferred completing paintings on the spot and often worked on four or five paintings at a time to show a single view in different weather conditions. Such was her commitment to her art that she would stand out in snow on a covering over heated stones in order to paint.
