Samoan ceremonial staff

Production date
Circa 1900
Description
The correct name is a Tala valu, referring to the ‘teeth’ represented by the triangular spikes each side. Originally a rather lethal weapon, this taonga has become ceremonial and Samoans in early colonial photographs are often depicted holding this staff.
