Lemon squeezer hat, 16th (Waikato) Regiment

Production date
1914-1918
Description
This iconic khaki felt ‘lemon squeezer’ hat belonged to A.A. Holmes. The ‘lemon squeezer’ was purportedly first shaped by soldier William George Malone to resemble the outline of Mt Taranaki (and to allow quick runoff of rainwater). The New Zealand Infantry Division adopted the design on January 1, 1916.

This hat was worn by Lieutenent A.A. Holmes, 16th (Waikato) Regiment, during World War I.
