Description
Victorian black and gold mourning brooch. Rectangular in shape with a rectangular shaped gold framed glass insert at centre front. Within this glass insert is a woven arrangemnt of human hair. Around the framed glass in gold italic writing " IN. MEMORY. OF" on a black painted background. The entire edge of the brooch has a raised gold decorative design. Reverse side is plain gold with a silver metal pin clasp attachment.
A popular Victorian custom of preserving a lock of hair from a sweetheart or deceased person.
