Edward Pearson was one of the original settlers in Kirikiriroa. Struggling to survive on his plot of land, he abandoned it for the Thames gold fields. Two years later he was back in Hamilton, and bankrupt. Then Pearson developed a unique recipe for carbolic sand soap. He was soon the owner of a thriving business, even exporting to Sydney.
