Description
Oil on board painting by Pam Watson. Information from the artist: "State Highway I, below Taupiri Mountain, is also Flanders and Golgotha, and these are the crosses that mark our place. Jesus is dying, the light is gone, an approaching car has its headlights on. Soldiers on the ridges have a Paul Nash starshell. Two Otto Dix soldiers lie lifeless in the Flanders mud. Grunewald's Mary waits. The incomprehension, rage and despair of the mothers – at the young men who think they are immortal, and the political and social systems that help them die – changes nothing."
