Martini Enfield Cavalry Carbine Mk1, .303 inch calibre converted to .303 inch calibre from a Martini Rifle Mk 111 1880, in .450 x .577 inch calibre. Forend nosecap is missing and nose of forewood altered. Rear sight graduated 0 - 2,000 yards.

Maker Royal Arms Factory, Enfield, England Military Ordnance acceptance marks on barrel and action. Markings `NZ / 98' top of action (issued in N.Z. in 1898).
`H.E.Co Ld / 11. / 1.'Right butt wood.
`>S<' Sold out of Service mark. Loading method: Breech loading, single shot.
Usage: NZ military issue in 1898.
Place of Origin: UK.
Date: 1895, 1898.
Sold out of service. (Boer War later period).
