Description
As food storehouses, paataka were often associated with women, particularly in the work of Paakehaa artists. In Maori Wahine, Adele Younghusband depicts Maaori women near a wharenui (meeting house). To the left of the women stands a paataka (storehouse) with the carved threshold (paepae) visible across the bottom of the elevated structure. The two women are dressed in traditional korowai (cloaks), prominently displaying precious pounamu (greenstone) hei tiki. Standing proud and erect, the younger of the two holds a mere pounamu (greenstone weapon) in her right hand.
