Description
German-born Jewish artist Margot Philips (1902 – 1988) is one of the Waikato’s leading twentieth-century artists. Philips’ career as an artist began after she arrived in Kirikiriroa Hamilton in 1938, first experimenting with landscape painting in the 1950s, and then rising in prominence through the 1960s and 1970s.

While Philips became known for her landscapes, during the 1960s she also produced monoprints. ‘The Red Tulips’ is similar in subject to Philips’ early still lifes, however in many of her prints Philips’ interest in the work of French artist Marc Chagall is more apparent. Philips was deeply inspired by some of Chagall’s paintings, which she saw exhibited when living in Germany.
