Description
E E Gillman. Proposed Residence, Paeroa. Drawing No.1. Ground Plan, East Elevation, North Elevation, Details of Framing.
This drawing is of particular interest because it depicts the house the architect designed for himself. Built for Gillman in 1913 by contractor Reginald Roberts, the house is a straightforward weatherboard bungalow with a pitched roof and wooden piles. All room lead off the central L-shaped hallway and as was common at that time, the laundry is in a separate outhouse, although the cast iron bath is in the house.. At 150 sq.m., the house is only modest for a 3-bedroom home. There are two fireplaces, one between the kitchen and dining room and another, smaller, one in the master bedroom. The living room opens out onto a porch in the south-east corner, the main entrance however faces north. Gillman has used stained glass windows in both the master bedroom and the front entrance way, and pencilled notes indicate exposed rafters were used in the dining room. The plans show steps leading down from the kitchen and bathroom, but another pencilled not suggests these were never built and were replaced with another veranda. There is a separate scullery and a walk-in wardrobe, both desirable features, but less desirable from modern perspectives was the asbestos ceiling lining used in the master bedroom.
