Description
Designed in 1920 and built the following year by contractor W Marshall, this two-storey office building and showroom for the Thames Valley Electric Power Board has an interesting floor plan that follows the road alignment outside. Located on the corner of Lipsey and Bridge Streets, it is a heavy masonry structure with a rhomboid form. Customers enter from the corner entrance directly into the showroom, which has an adjacent “dark room” – presumably to demonstrate the effect of light fittings as they would appear at night. At the rear of the building is a dedicated room for the use of the Council Engineer, indicative of the close connection between the two organisations. Lighting and ventilation are provided by a series of skylights and four “Torpedo” ventilators located on the roof ridge line.
This drawing shows ground and first floor plans and elevations from Bridge St & Lipsey St.
