Description
A fascinating glimpse of the “silent” era. We do not know if this cinema was actually built, but it gives some insight into the way people thought about the “picture hall” experience in 1914. Note the room for the piano (top left), the supper room and refreshments lobby (bar?) at bottom right and the cloak rooms adjacent to the exit and a long way from the entrance – an arrangement geared towards leisurely arrival and quick getaway. A stage provides for announcements and theatre shows. The placement of the service areas along one wall avoids the need to black out that side for screenings. The hall is approximately 66ft x 30ft, giving an area of some 200 sq.m.
