[Rongotea Co-op. Dairy Co. Ltd. Rongotea Butter Factory] Drawing No.2. West Elevation
Maker
Edgar Ernest Gillman
Production date
08 Jan 1910
Description
This view of a 1910 butter factory shows its concrete construction, still a relatively novel building medium at this time but welcome because of the improvements it provided in hygienic treatment of the processing plant and surrounding areas. Windows are sparse, reflecting the same desire to keep the work area sterile.
The drawing shows a simple gable roof, with seven “torpedo” ventilators and some of the 12 skylights. Decorative elements at each end of the ridge line are at least a nod to aesthetics but the building is essentially a simple, highly-functional box.
