Plan of Proposed Butter Factory at Rongotea for the Rongotea Co-op. Dairy Coy Ltd. Drawing No.1. Ground Plan
Maker
Edgar Ernest Gillman
Production date
08 Nov 1910
Description
This concrete and timber factory was built by contractor F. Potts in 1910, and the drawings are signed by him as well as by the Chairman of the Rongotea Co-op Dairy Co. Mr Herbert Hunt, and the Company Secretary Mr I.W. Whittaker. The building is notable for its open plan, with eight huge 12” x 5” tie beams spanning the 36 ft width of the structure. The main factory area is about 100 ft long. The floors all slope slightly into drains for cleaning. The factory design is typical for its time: the engine room and coal bunker are off to one side, and the main factory follows the production sequence from receiving, separating the butter fat from the skim milk, then making and storing the butter, The storage vat for the milk can be seen lower right, and the pumice-insulated storage room at lower left.
