Description
This well known image by Pulman is of Rewi Manga Maniapoto leader of Ngati Paretekawa a hapu of Ngati Maniapoto and a significant figure in Waikato during the Kingitanga movement of the 1860’s. He led a party which evicted the government appointed magistrate John Gorst and was a key military player in the ensuing skirmishes with General Duncan Cameron that were to follow. Rewi passed away in 1894 at his home in Kihikihi, Waikato.

Elizabeth Pullman (1836-1900) was born Chadd in Lymm, Cheshire, England. With her husband, George Pulman, she left England with her family and arrived in Auckland, New Zealand in 1861. Pulman’s husband established a photographic studio in Shortland Street and began a successful trade in scenic and portrait work. Upon his death in 1871, she took over the business and remarried four years later. Pulman continued to operate the firm until just before her death in 1900. She left a significant archive of images from an important period of New Zealand’s history.
