Description
Turangawaewae. After the 1863-64 Land Wars, King Tawhiao’s land was confiscated by the colonial forces and used to accommodate some stables. It later became Ngaruawahia’s unofficial town dump. In 1920 Tawhiao’s granddaughter Te Puea Herangi, led her people to buy back the land, returning it to Tainui Ownership. Turangawaewae is now the seat of the Kingitanga Movement, hosting many hui, including the annual Regatta.
