Description
Kakahi. The freshwater mussel once formed extensive beds in the Waikato River and was harvested as food by Maori. The current scarcity of Kakahi may have something to do with their strange lifecycle. During their larval stage Kakahi need to parasitically attach themselves to a native fish; but this fish has become rare, presumably because of river pollution.
