Notes supplied by photograph. This shot by Gil Hanly, a renowned social photographer, shows police assaulting educator and activist Tom Newnham after the announcement that the match had been cancelled. Newnham (1926-2010) was the National Secretary of the Citizens Association for Racial Equality (C.A.R.E)—an organisation opposed to the tour and a voice against racism, and for social justice.
