Set of nine black and white photographs of Miringa Te Kakara (Bennydale) in envelope. Miringa Te Karkara, meaning 'Fragrant Breeze' is a Maaori house of learning, first established by the followers of the Pao-Mirere or Hau Hau faith in the late 18th century. These photographs show the second iteration of the
'house of learning, believed to have been set up at Bennydale during the 1860s. The 'Cruciform' house was built in the shape of a cross and had four entrances. The roof was made of Totara bark. It was burned down in 1983.
