Taupiri Mountain

Maker
Walter Wright
Production date
1910
Description
For the peoples of the Tainui waka, Taupiri is the maunga tapu, or mountain of spiritual significance. Kiingitanga leaders are laid to rest on the mountain, as are many Tainui families of the Waikato subtribes.

Auckland-based brothers Frank and Walter Wright worked with Stanhope Forbes at the Newlyn School in Cornwall, England. A basis in English Impressionism was continued by the two painters during their years in New Zealand. Wright captured Taupiri mountain during the very last years of Kiingi Taawhiao's reign, most likely painted plein air style out in the open country.
