Description
This salt glazed stoneware vase from the 1950s shows Peter’s confident approach to ceramics.

Juliet Peter (1915- ) was born in Canterbury, New Zealand. She studied painting at Canterbury College School of Art in the 1930s and her work from this period is closely related to the regional approaches of Rita Angus and Doris Lusk. In the 1950’s she studied printmaking in London and also studied ceramics at Hammersmith School of Art. An influential figure in the development of New Zealand ceramics Peter’s work was considered stylish and individual. Peter was also committed to publishing and had a long standing relationship with the School Journal which she provided illustrations for and New Zealand Potter which she worked on from 1962. In 1999 Peter was awarded the OBE in recognition for her outstanding contribution to the visual arts in New Zealand.
