King Country Landscape

Maker
John Weeks
Description
This painting of the Waikato landscape shows many of the characteristics of Week’s painting style and use of colour.

John Weeks (1886–1965) was born in Sydenham Damerel, England. His family immigrated to a farm at Mangapiko near Te Awamutu in 1892 and later relocated to Northcote in Auckland. Weeks attended Elam School of Fine Arts in 1908 and also classes at the Sydney Technical College between 1913 and 1915. In 1917 he joined the war effort as a member of the New Zealand Medical Corps. Weeks spent much of the 1920s travelling and studying art in Europe and North Africa where he developed his signature painting style that was influenced most notably by time spent with cubist painter André Lhôte. On his return he took a position at Elam where he was to remain for the next 25 years. His influence on many of New Zealand’s and particularly Waikato’s regionalist painters was significant while his own practice was not to flourish to the same extent.
