South Pacific, First Light No.1
Maker
Michael Moore
Production date
2007
Description
This skyscape captures the beautiful light that seems unique to our piece of the South Pacific as the first country in the world to see the dawning of the new day. Based on a series by the same name, this work reflects the essence of artist Michael Moore’s approach to painting. His use of bold forms and clear graduated colour fields accentuate the division of clouds and the horizon. The choppy, condensed clouds act as a counterpoint to the brightening expanse of the dawn sky.
Michael Moore (1956–) is a self-taught artist based near Cambridge in the Waikato district. Taking up painting fulltime in the 1990s, Moore developed a distinctive style and a passion for depicting the natural environment. A frequent traveller, Moore works out of visual diaries as a way of recording the places and landscapes he visits. This has also influenced his tendency to work in series when creating his paintings. His work has been collected extensively throughout New Zealand and internationally.
