Portrait of Te Puea Herangi (1884 - 1952), painted from a photograph of her during WWII. This is a portrait of her later in her life.

John Cecil Hill, a self-taught painter and cartoonist, was educated at Dulwich College, England. After serving in World War I he returned to New Zealand and for some years worked in various military positions. In 1927 he was appointed cartoonist to the Auckland Star, and completed a small number of portraits including one of Sir Edmund Hillary in the 1950s following his ascent of Mt Everest.
