Description
This hei tiki from Hauraki is carved from pounamu or greenstone and is a fine example of these highly regarded taonga. Often named for a significant ancestor, hei tiki were passed down through the generations. Pounamu is found only in the South Island, making it an expensive and sort after material by those in the North. It was often traded or looted during intertribal exchanges.
