Sandy Adsett (Ngāti Kahungunu) was born on the East Coast in Wairoa in 1939. An influential contributor to and catalyst for the Maori Visual Arts movement since the 1950s, he became an arts specialist for the Department of Education’s Advisory Service in the 1960s, helping introduce the new Maori Arts in Schools programme.
