Description
This image is one of thirty photographs printed by photographer David Hurn following a visit to Maketū Marae, on the Kāwhia Harbour in the early 1990s. Hurn took the photographs while accompanying the Maori Queen, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, on a tour of marae in the Waikato region. The settlement at Maketū Marae marks the site of the resting place of the Tainui canoe following its journey from Hawaiiki and is the home of the Ngāti Mahuta people.
