Description
This abstracted work, consisting of bold colours, shapes and brushstrokes is typical of paintings by Rob Gardiner prior to his move to Auckland in 2002. His interest in creating a sense of dynamism on the picture plane was driven by gestural actions, creating a sense of vibrancy.

Rob Gardinar was for many years a member of the Waikato Society of Arts, Hamilton, before establishing the Chartwell Trust, one of New Zealand’s major collections of contemporary art from New Zealand and Australia. Gardinar spent many years as a painter both in Hamilton and in Auckland before his practice began to turn towards more sculptural concerns. Frustrated by the limitations of the canvas, Gardinar began to explore the trappings of the painting. Hanging hooks, ties and bungees all became components in his exploration of space. In recent years this has grown to include the walls, floors and ceiling of the gallery, transforming spaces into 3D canvases.
