Description
This artwork by Matchitt was an entrant in the 2006 Trust Waikato Contemporary Art Award Exhibition. Matchitt describes the Hohoro as a manawa wera or haka like song. Hohoro is a confirmation of identity and place and is particularly used in formal settings such as entering a Marae. Hohoro refers to an avalanche not only in the physical sense but also to a conceptual avalanche of information/knowledge.

Gina Matchitt (1966- ) was born in Rotorua and is of Te Arawa and Whakatohea descent. In 1994, she graduated from UNITEC, Auckland with a Diploma of Design in Jewellery. After winning the Seppelt Contemporary Art Award with her series ‘Merchandise’, Matchitt went on to develop an art career which explored issues of cultural appropriation and popular culture. Matchitt is currently based in Washington D. C, USA.
