Description
Garth Tapper was a social realist painter, depicting contemporary New Zealand life. He painted numerous portraits. This painting is a figure study of a violinist in a orchestra. His style here is sketchy, capturing the immediacy of the movement action of his subject.
Garth Tapper (1927-1999) was born at Taupiri, Waikato. Tapper studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts and also went on to attend Slade Art School and the Chelsea School of Art in the UK. After a period spent travelling around Europe Tapper returned to New Zealand with his wife in 1953 to take up teaching in Auckland. He went on to teach at Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland University for the next 17 years continuing to paint throughout this period. Following his retirement in 1977 he took up painting full-time until his death.
