Founder's Theatre Mural Poster - Working Drawing

Maker
Hone Papita Raukura Hotere
Production date

Description
This is a working drawing by Ralph Hotere for the mural which was commissioned by the Hamilton City Council for the western wall of the foyer of the Founders Memorial Theatre. Hotere's mural was the result of a two stage competition organised by the Hamilton City Council and the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council. His winning work was unveiled on Saturday 25 August, 1973 and reflected Hotere’s interest in minimalist abstraction and aspects of the local landscape.

Hone Papita Raukura Hotere (1931) of Te Aupōuri descent was born in Mitimiti, Northland. After attending Hato Petera College in Auckland, Hotere studied in Dunedin. In the 1960s he travelled to Europe on a scholarship which had a profound impact on his art making. In 1965 he returned to New Zealand and settled in Port Chalmers where he lived until his death in February 2013. As an artist, activist and inspiration, Hotere crafted a place for Maori modernist art in twentieth century Aotearoa New Zealand. Despite his ambivalence about being labelled as a Maori artist, Hotere is now claimed as a founding figure of today’s contemporary Māori art movement. His minimalist approach and collaborations with artists, poets, writers and film-makers cemented his place as one of New Zealand's most renowned artists.
